Seven dead after passenger ship carrying 267 people sinks off coast of northern Cyprus

A cargo vessel carrying 267 people sank off the northern coast of Cyprus on Saturday, resulting in at least seven fatalities and leaving seventeen individuals still missing. The incident occurred approximately six kilometers off the coast of Kyreneia, where the ship, en route from Kyreneia to the Turkish port of Taşucu, began taking on water around midday. The Turkish Interior Ministry confirmed that 259 passengers and eight crew members were aboard at the time of the sinking. Authorities have since arrested the captain and eight other crew members for further investigation, though the cause of the accident remains undetermined.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with local officials reporting that 244 individuals have been accounted for thus far. Mayor Murat Senkul of Kyreneia described the situation as "very serious" in a social media update, emphasizing the urgency of the rescue efforts. Video footage shared on social media shows passengers wearing life jackets on the overturned hull, awaiting assistance. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing aid, stating that Cyprus has the resources and operational capacity to respond immediately to maritime emergencies.

The sinking has drawn attention amid the longstanding division of Cyprus, which dates back to 1974 following a Greek-backed military coup and subsequent Turkish invasion. The island remains split between the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus in the south and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. This maritime incident underscores ongoing challenges in regional stability and safety.

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the sinking, and investigations are continuing. The vessel’s condition and the sequence of events leading to the disaster remain under scrutiny as search-and-rescue teams work to locate the missing individuals.
