Trippier praises Miley's 'big presence' as Newcastle face Tonali reunion

Lewis Miley’s emergence as Newcastle United’s next midfield star takes a dramatic turn this weekend when the 20-year-old meets his former mentor Sandro Tonali in Premier League action.

Newcastle’s summer rebuilding saw Tonali leave for Tottenham Hotspur, while Bruno Guimarães joined Arsenal, prompting the Magpies to bring in midfield reinforcements. But manager Matthias Jaissle has wasted no time elevating the club’s academy graduate, giving Miley a starring role just months after he became the youngest English player to assist a Champions League goal for an English club. Jaissle handed Miley his Premier League bow against Liverpool in August, barely three weeks after the teenager returned from a broken-leg layoff.

Tonali, now at Spurs, returns to St James’ Park as an opponent for the first time when Newcastle visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (17:30 BST) in a clash that looms large in the early-season title race. The match will pit two midfield metronomes against each other—one in sky-blue, the other in claret and white—after Tonali’s £55m transfer to Spurs catapulted him into the Premier League spotlight.

Team-mate Kieran Trippier, who played alongside Miley during their Newcastle days, is in no doubt about the youngster’s readiness. “You can see the development from when he first started training with the first team to where he is now,” Trippier told BBC Sport. “He’s become a big presence and his ability for his age is immense. He can go as far as he wants to—I believe in him that much. But the most important thing is that he’s grounded and always wants to learn. That will stand him in really good stead.”

Miley’s poise has already caught the eye of two previous Newcastle managers. Eddie Howe, who handed him minutes at right-back because of injuries to Tino Livramento, revealed Miley played more minutes (1,403) than any English teenager in the Premier League last season before his 20th birthday. Among all under-20 players in the division at the time, Miley ranked first for assists (4), successful passes (738), final-third passes (188) and line-breaking passes (164). He also showed defensive grit with 20 interceptions, 69 possession wins and 84 successful duels.

Jaissle, who replaced Howe in summer 2023, has continued the trust-building approach. After Miley starred in Newcastle’s opening-day draw at Liverpool, the German coach said, “Not to put too much pressure on him but, honestly, coming back from a long injury with a really short pre-season and showing that in the first match is something special.” Jaissle’s post-match bear hug underlined the club’s high regard for the local talent whose younger brother, Mason Miley, is also in Newcastle’s academy.

With the transfer window closed and no further senior arrivals expected in midfield, Miley looks set to retain his place when Tonali’s Spurs visit. Jaissle has cautiously suggested the academy product could shoulder greater responsibility as Newcastle seek to replace the “vacuum” left by the departures. Trippier even handed Miley the Champions League armband against PSV Eindhoven last term, a symbolic passing of the torch that underscored the youngster’s leadership potential.

Saturday’s fixture may be only matchday four of the new campaign, but it already carries the weight of a generational shift in Newcastle’s midfield hierarchy.
