Trump Faces Midterm Reckoning as GOP Support Wanes, Polls Show
Analysis of Trump's declining influence and GOP struggles ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, with polling showing weak approval and potential electoral losses.

Republicans Face Potential Midterm Setback as Trump’s Influence Wanes
WASHINGTON — Sixty-nine days before the November 8 midterm elections, polls and political trends point to a significant electoral backlash against former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Current projections suggest that the GOP may lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives and even the Senate, dealing a major blow to Trump’s legislative agenda and exposing deepening fractures within his party.
Recent polling data underscores the challenges facing Trump and Republicans. According to political analyst G. Elliott Morris, Trump’s approval rating on border security—a once-reliable strong point—has dipped into negative territory, registering at -5. Meanwhile, only 17% of voters strongly approve of his performance, compared to 49% who strongly disapprove. This enthusiasm gap, coupled with Trump’s polarizing influence, has left many GOP candidates in a precarious position: distancing themselves from him risks alienating his base, while embracing him could further damage their appeal to swing voters.
Trump’s own rhetoric has reflected growing anxiety over his party’s prospects. On Truth Social, he shared a post from MAGA influencer Matt Van Swol, who warned that Republicans risked a “midterm reckoning” if they failed to deliver on promised reforms. “People believed they were voting for the Trump agenda,” Van Swol wrote. “And instead, many feel like they’re getting the same old Washington.” Trump’s amplification of such concerns suggests a recognition—however belated—that his party’s performance in office has fallen short of expectations.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has doubled down on Trump’s leadership, with Chair Joe Gruters advocating for full-throated support of the former president. At a recent rally for Senate candidate Darline Graham, Trump urged voters to “pretend… that I’m on the ballot,” emphasizing the importance of turnout. Yet analysts warn that this strategy may backfire, as voters increasingly sour on Trump’s brand of politics.
Beyond electoral consequences, Trump’s efforts to reshape institutions in his favor have raised alarms. Reports indicate that Trump recently appointed four allies to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors, tipping the board toward a pro-Trump majority. Critics argue that these appointees lack relevant experience, instead prioritizing election skepticism—a move that could undermine the integrity of mail-in voting ahead of future elections.
As the midterms approach, the GOP’s path forward remains uncertain. With Trump’s influence waning and voter frustration mounting, Republicans face the prospect of a historic electoral repudiation—one that could reshape the political landscape for years to come.
