Wardley-Dubois rematch set for 17 October in London

Daniel Dubois is set to defend his WBO heavyweight world title against former champion Fabio Wardley in a highly anticipated rematch at London’s O2 Arena on 17 October. The bout, announced during Saturday’s undercard of Moses Itauma’s IBF heavyweight title fight with Filip Hrgovic, marks a significant chapter in the heavyweight division’s evolving landscape. Both fighters bring impressive records—Dubois holds 23 wins with 22 knockouts and three defeats, while Wardley boasts 20 victories, including 19 stoppages, with one loss and one draw.
Londoner Dubois, 28, claimed his second world title in May by knocking out Wardley in the 11th round of an all-British showdown in Manchester. The fight lived up to its billing, with Wardley dropping Dubois early but ultimately succumbing to a bloodied and battered defense before the referee halted the contest. It was Wardley’s first professional defeat in his 22nd bout. Speaking ahead of the rematch, Dubois expressed confidence in a dominant victory, declaring, “When you get in the water, you're going to get wet. We will see.”
Wardley, 31, has since rebounded with determination, calling the rematch a chance for “revenge.” The Ipswich native rose rapidly through the ranks, transitioning from unlicensed white-collar boxing at age 19 to challenging for world titles. His journey contrasts with Dubois’s more turbulent career, which includes three losses but also two world title reigns—most recently over Wardley. Both men are now positioned for potential high-profile matchups, especially if rising prospect Moses Itauma secures a world title.
A blockbuster next summer could await the winner of Dubois-Wardley II, depending on Itauma’s progress. The 20-year-old Briton, aiming to become the second-youngest heavyweight world champion after Mike Tyson, currently faces a mandatory defense against Frank Sanchez if he defeats Hrgovic. Promoter Frank Warren has hinted at a possible Wembley Stadium showdown pitting the winner of Dubois-Wardley II against Itauma, pending further results.
The heavyweight division remains in flux following Oleksandr Usyk’s decision to vacate his titles. The WBA belt is held by Russian Murat Gassiev, while Germany’s Agit Kabayel holds the WBC strap. With fragmentation still evident, the upcoming Dubois-Wardley rematch could play a pivotal role in reshaping the division’s future.
