Earth Overshoot Day 2025 Hits Earliest Date Ever on July 24th
Humanity has used up Earth's annual resources by July 24, 2025, the earliest overshoot day since 2006, per Global Footprint Network.

Humanity has reached Earth Overshoot Day earlier than ever before, according to the Global Footprint Network. The date, July 24, marks the point in the year when human demand for natural resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in a year. This is the earliest date recorded since the event was first calculated in 2006.
Earth Overshoot Day is calculated annually by the Global Footprint Network, a research organization that measures humanity's demand on nature. The date has been moving earlier each year, indicating a rapid increase in human consumption and resource depletion. This year, the organization recalculated past Earth Overshoot Days for greater accuracy.
According to the latest calculations, Earth Overshoot Day fell on December 31 in 1972. By 1979, it had moved up to November 3. In the early 1980s, the date shifted back to early December, before moving up to October 12 by 1989. From 1989 to 1999, the date remained in October, reaching September 25 in 2000. In 2006, when Earth Overshoot Day was first announced, the date was August 22. It reached July for the first time in 2018, returned to August briefly in 2020, and has remained in July since then. The previous earliest record was July 25, set in 2022 and 2023.
This year's Earth Overshoot Day highlights the extent of human consumption and the strain on natural resources. According to the Global Footprint Network, humanity is currently using nature 1.8 times faster than Earth's ecosystems can regenerate. This means that consumption of freshwater, trees, and seafood, among other resources, is outpacing replenishment. Additionally, carbon emissions are exceeding the capacity of ecosystems to absorb them.
The Global Footprint Network warns that the cumulative effect of this overconsumption is increasing pressure on the planet. The organization notes that humanity is nearly exceeding seven of nine planetary boundaries, which are the thresholds that define a safe operating space for humanity.
Lewis Akenji, board member of the Global Footprint Network, stated, "We are stretching the limits of how much ecological damage we can get away with. It is now a quarter into the 21st century and we owe the planet at least 22 years of ecological regeneration, even if we stop any further damage now. If we still want to call this planet home, this level of overshoot calls for a scale of ambition in adaptation and mitigation that should dwarf any previous historical investments we have made, for the sake of our common future."
The Global Footprint Network emphasizes that it is not too late to correct course. The organization outlines several actions that could move Earth Overshoot Day back in the calendar through a campaign called the Power of Possibility. Cutting carbon emissions by 50% could move the date three months later. Reducing global food waste by half could push the date 13 days, establishing a global Green New Deal could move the date 42 days, and generating at least 75% of electricity from renewables could push the date by 26 days.
Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder and board member of the Global Footprint Network, stated, "Because of the nature of physics, overshoot cannot last. It will end either by deliberate design or dumped-on disaster. It should not be too hard to choose which one is preferable, particularly in light of so many possible choices."
