Israeli forces seal West Bank village for more than 20 hours as settler violence escalates

Israeli forces have maintained a prolonged closure of the sole entrance to the West Bank village of al-Mughayyir, restricting access for more than 20 consecutive hours, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The siege occurred amid escalating violence involving Israeli settlers, who have increasingly targeted Palestinian communities in the occupied territory since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The restrictions on al-Mughayyir follow reports of settler raids accompanied by Israeli military presence, which have intensified in recent months.

Local reports cited by Haaretz indicate that armed settlers, alongside Israeli forces, raided al-Mughayyir on Friday, assaulting residents and seizing 15 lambs, with one sheep found injured. Three Palestinians were wounded—one by live fire and two others after being beaten by settlers. Ambulances attempting to reach the wounded were reportedly blocked by the settlers and soldiers. Amin Abu Aliya, head of al-Mughayyir’s village council, told Wafa that the entrance gate was only opened intermittently, allegedly to pressure residents into leaving the area.

The Palestinian Authority’s foreign ministry condemned the siege, describing it as part of a broader campaign to displace Palestinians from the West Bank. In a statement, the ministry accused Israel of implementing policies aimed at "killing, terrorism, and forced displacement," calling on the international community to intervene. The escalation in settler violence has drawn comparisons to similar incidents in other West Bank villages, including Qusra near Nablus, where Israeli settlers have besieged Palestinian homes in the Ras al-Ain area for weeks.

In Qusra, settlers have blocked access to water, electricity, and food supplies by installing a military gate at the village’s main entrance and setting up additional roadblocks. The restrictions have forced residents to take longer, often obstructed routes to reach necessities. The Palestinian Authority has repeatedly condemned these actions, framing them as part of a systematic effort to erode Palestinian presence in the region.

Settler violence in the West Bank has been a persistent issue for decades, but the frequency and severity of attacks have surged since October 2023, coinciding with Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The United Nations and human rights organizations have documented a sharp rise in settler attacks, often with military support, leading to increased displacement and property destruction.
