Scientists Discover Deepest Animal Communities Nearly 6 Miles Below Sea Level

Marine researchers have documented the deepest-known animal communities ever observed, thriving nearly six miles beneath the ocean surface in the Mariana Trench. A Chinese deep-sea submersible expedition identified extensive colonies of mollusks and worms in the Kuril–Kamchatka and western Aleutian Trenches, challenging existing models of deep-ocean ecosystems.

A study published in Nature details the discovery, which expands scientific understanding of life in extreme environments. Researchers aboard the manned submersible Fendouzhe found chemosynthesis-based communities—organisms that derive energy from chemicals rather than sunlight—spanning 1,553.4 miles at depths ranging from 3.6 to 5.92 miles.

Lead author Xiatong Peng, of the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, noted that similar communities may exist in other hadal trenches due to shared geological features. The research team, including co-author Mengran Du, described the ecosystem as a "vibrant oasis" in an otherwise barren deep-sea environment.

The communities rely on hydrogen sulfide and methane seeping through ocean floor faults, supporting organisms such as siboglinid polychaetes (tube worms) and bivalves (clams and mussels). Video footage from the expedition revealed dense clusters of tubeworms up to a foot long, alongside mounds of clams, mollusks, crustaceans, sea cucumbers, and other invertebrates. The presence of microbial mats further indicated active methane production by deep-sea microbes.

These findings contradict earlier assumptions that such complex life could not exist at such extreme depths without sunlight. Historically, only single-celled organisms had been documented in the deepest ocean zones, with larger animals previously observed only near hydrothermal vents at shallower depths.

The Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans, has been visited only a handful of times since the first expedition in 1960. Filmmaker James Cameron, who descended in 2012, described the environment as "desolate" and "alien."

The discovery coincides with ongoing international debates over deep-sea mining. Environmental scientists warn that extracting minerals from the seafloor could devastate fragile ecosystems in one of Earth’s last largely unexplored regions. The International Seabed Authority has yet to finalize regulations for the industry despite recent negotiations.

The Fendouzhe submersible completed 23 dives in the western Pacific during 2024, contributing critical data to deep-ocean research. The study, titled "Flourishing chemosynthetic life at the greatest depths of hadal trenches," underscores the resilience of life in Earth’s most extreme habitats and highlights the urgency of preserving these uncharted ecosystems before they face industrial exploitation.
