Soldiers foil terrorists’ advance in Sokoto community

Troops from Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have successfully thwarted an advance by armed terrorists toward Ghandi town in Rabah Local Government Area, Sokoto State, according to a military statement released on August 31.
The operation followed credible intelligence indicating the movement of an armed group toward the community on Sunday, August 30. Troops, led by the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, quickly mobilized to intercept the threat. Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, confirmed that soldiers deployed to strategic positions near Ghandi Bridge to engage the advancing insurgents.
Upon making contact, the troops engaged the terrorists, using superior firepower to overpower the group. The confrontation forced the attackers into a chaotic retreat, with several insurgents sustaining gunshot wounds and attempting to escape by jumping into a nearby river. A subsequent clearance operation at daybreak recovered one AK-47 rifle, a loaded magazine, additional ammunition, and personal items abandoned by the fleeing militants.
The recovered weapons and materials were secured by the military, while ongoing search and mop-up operations continued in the area to track down remaining suspects and prevent further threats to Ghandi and neighboring communities. Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which covers Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states, remains focused on containing terrorist activities and restoring security in the region.
This latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges in northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups have targeted rural communities. The military’s proactive response reflects efforts to curb insurgent movements and protect civilians in Sokoto State.
