I surveyed workers to see if AI had caused job losses and was surprised by the findings

A recent survey of U.S. workers suggests that artificial intelligence, including tools like ChatGPT, has had limited impact on job losses and gains four years after its mainstream adoption.

Sociologist Anton Sobolev, who researches AI and labor trends, commissioned a YouGov survey of 1,250 U.S. workers conducted from July 30 to August 4, 2026. The findings, part of an ongoing study, indicate that only 3% of workers reported losing a job due to AI since 2023, while 6% said they had secured positions that did not exist before AI’s rise. Approximately 9% noted receiving promotions linked to AI skills.

The survey, designed to reflect the U.S. workforce in terms of age, gender, race, and education, asked three key questions about AI’s role in job changes since 2023. Nearly 95% of respondents said they had not lost a job due to AI, 90% reported no new AI-created jobs, and 88% denied receiving promotions tied to AI. Between 3% and 4% were uncertain about any AI-related job changes.

Experts caution that these results align with broader labor market trends, where job changes remain rare. While AI appears to offer some workers opportunities for advancement, its long-term effects on careers are still unclear. Researchers note that newer forms of AI, capable of autonomous action, may reshape the value of current AI skills in the future.

The survey provides a snapshot of worker experiences but has limitations. Participants, recruited through YouGov’s online panel, may not represent all U.S. workers. Additionally, the survey was conducted when the national unemployment rate stood at 4.1%, with reports suggesting AI contributed to some layoffs.

Unlike other studies that focus solely on job losses, Sobolev’s research examines job creation and promotions, offering a more comprehensive view of AI’s labor market impact. Ongoing analysis aims to explore which workers are benefiting from AI-related advancements and how AI is being used on the job.
