Research shows that people experience distinct seasonal shifts in energy and social behavior. Winter often brings lower energy, reduced immune function and less engagement in physical activity, while spring and summer tend to boost vitality and social interaction. These differences are even more pronounced across hemispheres. A person living in the Northern Hemisphere in February may feel sluggish due to short daylight and cold weather, while someone in the Southern Hemisphere in the same month might be experiencing the warmth of late summer. Such variations affect not only individuals but also global teams, especially as remote and hybrid work becomes standard since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Global collaboration now means that colleagues often operate in different seasonal and time-zone rhythms. A team member in Paris might struggle with summer heat and fatigue, while a teammate in Santiago, Chile, may feel the slowdown of winter. Meanwhile, a colleague in Calgary, Canada, could be thriving in long daylight hours. These mismatches can strain productivity and well-being, yet they are rarely addressed by organizational leadership. A 2024 survey of 28,000 employees across 16 countries found that when leaders foster psychological safety—encouraging open discussions about workload, stress and seasonal performance—employees are happier, less likely to quit and more resilient.
To build sustainable resilience, Capaldi recommends three evidence-based steps. First, acknowledge that fluctuations in energy and stress are normal and not personal failings. Viewing high-stress periods as opportunities for focus and low-energy phases as necessary for rest can improve long-term performance. Second, integrate your work and lifestyle with your natural rhythms. Adjust sleep schedules in winter, schedule demanding tasks during peak alertness times and plan breaks after intense work periods. Third, adapt when external demands don’t align with your biology. Maintaining healthy habits like proper sleep, balanced nutrition, regular exercise and mindfulness practices builds a buffer against unpredictable stress.
Ultimately, resilience is not a fixed trait but a dynamic balance shaped by biology and environment. Recognizing and working with these rhythms—rather than fighting them—can help individuals and teams thrive year-round.
